Auto repair is a necessity, right? Cars need to be maintained, they need repairs, and they need service. Certainly convenience is nice, but it’s an added bonus. One would think that convenience and the necessity of auto repair are indeed complementary – albeit rare. What few understand, however, is that the auto repair industry charges for convenience. In other words, you could and should be able to get your car repaired for less – sometimes lots less – but because you broke down here and not there, you pay more.

Repair prices vary greatly from shop to shop for a numbers of reasons (discussed at length in RepairTrust literature). The focus here is the mind-set in the auto repair industry that it is ok to charge customers extra for convenience.

For perspective, here’s a break down of an actual transaction.

After a careful analysis of a $1600 auto repair bill, it was clear that $200 of it was excessive. The excessive charges were as follows: an extra $10 for a battery (compared to MSRP – Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price), an extra $125 for an alternator (compared to MSRP), and an additional $65 in labor (compared to industry guidelines).

While this particular customer was a busy executive and was glad for the quick service and convenience, what about the single mom struggling to make ends meet? An additional $200 in repairs might mean a late rent check.

Convenience charges are extremely common, but hard to prove. The justifications for these charges are numerous. They include, but are not limited to the following:

Business is Slow – see the article: Auto Repair Costs – The Worst Time of Year For Car Repair (@ EzineArticles.com or RepairTrust.com) for an in-depth discussion of how car repair prices are manipulated

Overhead Expenses – the cost of doing business is repeatedly passed on to the car repair customer, very often unjustifiably

Competition – to keep a competitive edge against competition, shops will mark up prices stating that the client would have paid even more somewhere else. They will also use their own inferior parts from their own suppliers, despite the availability of better quality parts for less money.

Profit Margins – in the name of customer convenience, prices are frequently jacked up to maintain profit margins. For example, a repair shop will tack on an additional 20% to MSRP for a part that you could get for 20% less at a dealer.

Ego – you will pay extra for ego-inflated diagnosis and repair because most technicians are ill-qualified and thus self-conscious, which in turn fills them with feelings of grandiosity when they actually fix something right – how convenient for you!

What should you do…

In an industry that lacks standardization (that’s adhered to anyway) and an effective regulatory system, the auto repair customer stands alone.

Here are a few quick tips if you suspect convenience charges.

1) Get it in writing – get your estimates and repair orders in a detailed printout to enable you to scrutinize the charges

2) Ask questions – if you don’t understand a charge – ask. Don’t just pay and “assume” that you were treated fairly

3) Call another service center and request an estimate

4) Compare part prices with MSRP

5) Don’t be afraid to negotiate – ask for a discount if you’re having lots of repairs done. Check for specials, senior citizens discounts, coupons…etc

6) Be nice, sincere, and shrewd. Repair industry folks respond much more positively to someone who is sincere, and genuine. But be cautious and question everything.

It’s clear that auto repair is a necessity. The nature of the automobile and the conditions under which it must perform demands it. Car repair and maintenance is vital for the community and the economic structure of the world in which we live. Yet, the industry is run and controlled by a pack of wolves. Since we’re not talking about running into a convenience store for an over-priced gallon of milk, perhaps a little more help (by way of transparent pricing standards) from Uncle Sam is in order.

Are there specific times during the year when you’re more likely to get ripped-off? The short answer is yes! While it is always important to keep an eye on car repair costs, it pays to be especially alert during the months of January, February and March.

The automotive repair industry can be quite turbulent, but it almost always experiences a slump from January to March – even April. There are a number of reasons for this, but the simple answer is that most folks service their vehicles in the spring and the fall – not during the icy cold months of a new year. For this reason, your mechanic, service advisor, and/or shop owner can get very aggressive in their repair suggestions.

There’s nothing wrong with suggesting repairs and vehicle maintenance – provided the work is needed. The trouble comes when the work is being suggested because your particular shop is slow.

Here’s how it plays out in real life at a car dealership, for example. You drop your vehicle off for an oil change. Your service advisor may make some service suggestions right away, or you may get a phone call that sounds something like this…

“Yeah, hi, Mr. Jones – this is So-and-So from So-and-So Chevrolet. I wanted to let you know that we have your car in the shop and the technician noticed that your front brakes are junk and that you need two new tires (they’re badly worn) and an alignment (which is way out) – your car’s not safe to drive. Do you want us to take care of this while it’s here?”

Now, remember that you drove your car in and it probably felt fine. Nevertheless, according to the experts – you’re in danger. It’s important to note that your vehicle may indeed need work of which you are not aware; however, this example highlights the all-too-common story that few know about and NO ONE talks about.

Here’s what really happened with your car on that cold February afternoon. The flat rate technician (someone who only gets paid when he produces) looked over your car extra carefully, looking for anything that will help fatten his paycheck. While it’s true that your brakes are worn – perhaps 75% – they are far from “junk.” They may even last until the spring. The tires, only “slightly” worn, may just be due to lack of rotation – not an alignment issue.

Should you agree to the above recommendations, the technician will add approximately 4.5 hours of labor to his pay check, the service representative gets his commission and you’re out a grand – conservatively.

What to do…

First, ask questions. Do not assume that because your service representative sounds professional and/or authoritative that he or she is telling you the “whole” truth. Ask for alternatives.

For example, ask if they can just rotate the tires for now and come back for the brakes in the spring. Ask them to prioritize the repairs. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion from another shop, or ask to speak with the service manager. Also, watch out for vague language like “junk” or “way out.” Get specifics.

Too often, car repair customers are bamboozled into doing work immediately when it could be spread out over months, or even years. Of course, there are many cases where the work wasn’t necessary at all – except to profit the repair facility during the slow season.

If there is something wrong with your car that needs to be fixed immediately, what do you do? Do you rush off to the mechanic to let him identify the problem? That is a good thing to do, sure.

Another smarter thing to do would be trying to identify the problem yourself. After all, we all know that our automobiles malfunction just for some minor problems.

You can try to identify the problem yourself before heading to the mechanic man to fix it by using some basic automobile troubleshooting strategy, just in case this could help save you expensive trips to the shop.

• Look For Information: Do some research on the internet to learn more about the usual kinds of automobile problems with your specific make and model so you can be prepared. Also check out maintenance issues and determine how often you should change the oil and other fluids, balance the tires, etc. And plan ahead with your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.

• Talk to A Mechanic: Seek the advice of a mechanic either nearby or via the web who has time to reply. Note you might not find one at hand each time, though one may be able to email back or reply via an automotive forum or website. If you are given free advice, remember to reply with a note of thanks.

• Perform Simple Troubleshooting Procedures: Check with your local library and bookstores for an owner’s manual for your make and model. These generally have a lot of basic info and steps to help you trouble shoot basic problems. Check the book’s publishing company and automotive manufacturer’s websites for help, too.

• Own a Basic Toolkit: Head to your local automotive store to piece together or purchase in full a good basic toolkit as these tools are those which will let you reach for the most hard to reach areas. They contain wrenches, screws, etc. sized for your vehicle. In case your car breaks down in the middle of the road, you can then use these tools to help you fix the car.

• Automotive Scan Tools: These days, specially devised automotive scan tools are available in the market to allow you diagnose the exact problem with your car. Earlier it would mean listening to your engine and waiting for the exact problem to get diagnosed through trial and error. Thankfully, we have come through that era now. Scan equipment isn’t free, though, so expect to pay a reasonable fee for this service.

• Know More, Operate Better: The more info you have in your tool belt, the better prepared your car and you will be for major and minor mishaps. Get and keep up to date with info about your vehicle by joining local and / or online groups. Find groups by checking with the dealership and via search engines, for example, search “jeep forum” and find plenty of members registered for free at forums for Jeep enthusiasts.

With periods of recession or other economic slow downs, it’s important for households to save up money for the management of all kinds of expenses. One such area is automobile repairs which can cost you lots of dollars. In these cases, it can be good to fix at least some of your problems relating to your car by yourself when possible. So see what you think and learn a little more about your car. Plus in the meantime, save a little aside regularly for your car’s upkeep and maintenance with a local auto repair shop.

This article is how to choose an automotive technician. We used to call them mechanics and some were named Grubber with arms so long that their hands dragged on the ground. These guys could fix things and many times without the right part being available. These old time mechanics were the guys you took into the outback.

Today the automotive technician wears a sharp shop uniform and does his work with a $100,000.00 worth of shop equipment. This guy’s service charges range where from $70 to $120 dollars per hour in the Tri-City area. If you are going to pay some one as much to fix your car as you did your doctor a few years ago then you should spend some time in selecting an automotive technician.

Some of the things that should be considered important in selecting a technician;

honestyIntegrityTrainingAbility to readCuriosityDesire to do a good job.Has an honest boss.Works for an honest business.Constantly up dates his training.Works on many makes and models. In choosing a technician it is recommended to choose an independent shop for a number of reasons. The most important is that the technician in an independent shop has to work on everything. This gives him greater insight and a much large pool of experience to draw upon.

You should check with people that have taken their cars to this shop. Most shops will recommend a few of their good customers that you can call. Ask these folks tough questions.

Interview the shop owner.

Ask the owner if he still works on cars. Ask him how he writes his estimates.Ask him how he figures the markup on parts.Ask him what his warrantee policy is?Ask if he has a written pricing policy and warrantee policy.Ask what his credit policy is.Ask if you can pick the technician to work on your car. Interview the technicians in the shop if possible:

Ask how they are paid?Ask if they are expected to bill more than 120 hours per month. (If they are find another shop).Ask if the shop pays for education and seminars. This all comes down to basic honesty. Flat rate is a method to write estimates but in should not be the end bill. If the flat rate program is good then the bill should be close to the estimate. The rub comes from the technician that works 40 hours per week and bills 80 hours per week. This means that the customer is overcharged by 50%. We are am not a great proponents of flat rate billing. Rattlesnake Mountain Enterprises spent a lot of time choosing a good flat rate program for doing estimates and bills. This program is the fairest that we could find both for the shop and the customer. I have yet to bill more than 25 hours of my own work in a week. Yes, I would be told that I was not efficient enough for a dealership or large independent shop. I have read some shop business plans that were based upon all technicians billing 120% of their time.

If you get positive answers to most of these questions, then give the shop a try. As you can see it pays to choose your auto repair facility before you have a serious problem.

To some people, a car is like a second home on wheels. It has all the amenities: air conditioning, music, and nice comfortable seats.

Yeah, the seats. They can really make the car comfortable. And then there are the floor mats and the other parts of the car’s cabin.

But what happens when something happens to the inside of your car? What happens when your auto upholstery tears, rips or is stained? Well, you take your car to a good auto upholstery repair shop. There are plenty of these shops. Here’s what you should know before choosing one.

Because it takes a lot of time and effort to repair seat covers, tops, and car upholstery, many shops may increase their prices. Also, for the same reason, many shops may take shortcuts when it comes to quality.

So you have to be careful. Auto upholstery isn’t necessarily an easy business. But It’s necessary. Everyone loves to have great looking auto upholstery.

Since many shops can cut costs and quality, it’s important to know that auto upholstery is all about precision. It takes detailed work to determine the right fit and look for your car.

Furthermore, often there are certain materials that go into the making of the material that covers your car’s seats. Many of the cars driven today use dense foam as a batting for the car seats. This foam makes the seats last a long time.

You want to look for an auto upholstery repair shop that can give you a selection of densities and chemical compositions.

You also want to make sure the person who will be working on your seat covers, top or auto upholstery is very knowledgeable about the work he or she will be doing. Take the time to question that person about the materials and chemicals that go into making the batting for the seats. Ask the person if they know how to work with the make and model of your car.

And while it’s true that ‘you want to consider costs when choosing an auto upholstery repair shops, you don’t want to skimp on quality. That means you may want to take the time to really compare auto upholstery repair shops. Get a real feel for what a few shops have to offer its customers.

Lastly, if you have any stains in your car, discuss them with an auto upholstery repair shop owner. That way you’ll know what kind of cleaning supplies or dry cleaning services they have on hand. Since dry cleaning can increase the price of auto upholstery services, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect if you discuss your stain issues upfront. Then compare prices for the different repair shops.

Today’s vehicles are made with many different types of fuel-saving materials like lightweight alloys and plastics. It is important for an auto body shop to be aware of the different materials and techniques used for repairing them.

Auto body shops and collision repair services refer to manuals for instructions repairing bumpers. The different material types require various finish materials, removal and installation procedures.

Bumper Repairs

When a plastic bumper is cracked or has a small hole it can be repaired to look as good as new. Replacing the bumper is wasteful and it creates unnecessary debris for our landfills. A good, eco-friendly auto body shop will only recommend replacing the bumper if the damage is severe enough that repair time would be considered unreasonable and quality of results would be unsatisfactory.

The cost of repairing small abrasions, cracks and holes in plastic bumpers is often much cheaper than replacing the part. Of course, many collision repair technicians would rather replace the part and charge a fee for their labor plus mark-up on the price of the part because they lack in cosmetic repair skills and it is easier to warranty the work.

Working with Plastics

The first step to repairing plastic bumpers is to identify the material in order to choose the method of repair. Auto body shops use ISO codes on the parts to identify the various families of plastics. They cross-reference the codes with charts from the suppliers or by accessing reference materials on the internet.

It is important that the collision repair technician determine the type of plastic they are working with so they know the proper welding procedure to use to avoid damage to the part.

Some plastics can be welded with an airless welder or hot-air welder; others require a hot glue type of procedure. Tests must be performed and welding procedures have to be done correctly to avoid adhesion failure. Some bumpers will melt with a slight color change and they will remain tacky in the area where they have melted.

Adhesive Repairs

The bumper repair technician must identify the type of plastic they are working with in order to be successful with adhesive repairs. Failure to properly identify the plastic results in adhesion-related problems.

Flexibility

Some repair materials are based on flexible and rigid plastics. Using the wrong material can cause cracking when the part is flexed or it may not provide the correct strength for the repair area.

Cleaning and Prep

Proper cleaning and prep is critical for proper adhesion and finish. Whether the technician is repairing or replacing the bumper, the part will need to be cleaned. The bumper being repaired is likely to be dirty from the road; the new replacement part can have contamination on it from the manufacturing process.

Auto body repair professionals should use a low-VOC surface cleaner or a special plastics parts cleaner to help prevent solvents from going too deep into the plastic. If solvents are too harsh, they go deep into the plastic and cause adhesion problems after repairs are done.

This is an overview of the process of working with plastics. Time is money in the auto body industry; therefore, many collision repair technicians choose to replace rather than repair plastic bumpers and other parts.

Technology allows us to repair many items that are often replaced. As resources become scarce and landfills become over-full, we really should consider repairing rather than replacing when possible.

Knowing a reliable car repair shop, will help keep your car operating in top condition while giving you peace of mind on the road and of course help protect your vehicle investment. Be cautious of the Auto Repair Shop that will take advantage of an unsuspecting customer. It is best to know something about vehicle repairs so that you are not totally caught off guard when discussing the repair.

Here are some tips for you to help you decide where to take your vehicle when it needs a tune-up or repair.

First look for a reliable car shop in your community. Try to observe where most people take their vehicles when they do have car problems. Try to seek opinions from your friends and neighbors on what car shop they would recommend and ask what experiences they have had. By having testimonials from people, who have experienced a certain repair shop, you can conclude from that how reputable the repair shop is.

Upon taking your car to your chosen shop, check if the shop itself is clean and organized. Try to talk to them about your concern and the possible services that they could offer for your needs. Be specific on the things that you want done. Some car repair shops may offer other services aside from what you really want. One may say that you need to change your brakes or you have some oil leaks when all you really want is for them to change your tires. In this aspect you need to get a full explanation so that you understand the reason for the repairs. and can have confidence that the repairs are really needed. If the repairs are really needed you appreciate the service shop telling you so that more costly repairs are avoided later on.

A good auto repair shop will give you a written estimate and will require your signature before getting the job done, especially on major repairs, such as an engine replacement or a major overhaul. With an estimate you may compare the prices by asking other car shops what they would charge. You can give other shops a phone call or visit their websites to do the research to save time. Try also checking the brands and quality of the materials that the repair shop is using for your car. With this, you will already know where to bring your vehicle. To attract more customers, some automotive shops offer a service warranty for a specific period of time. Hold on to this warranty just in case you need it. It will save cost and aggravation if something does break down.

You can save hundreds of dollars on car repairs just by putting out a little effort. Once you are familiar with a good repair shop and it is familiar with your car the relationship will build so that any potential problem can be seen with periodic service and your troubles on the road will be few.

With the computer age taking over, more and more businesses are turning to software and other technology to use in their shops. All the old 500 page repair manuals and guides are being put on their shelves and left to build dust until someone desires their hard bound qualities.

It’s no wonder that auto shops are one of the biggest buyers of the new software available today. It was not until the recent past 15 years that auto shops really started to get into the technological swing of things. Once a few companies had produced easy to navigate auto repair shop software, mechanics everywhere fleeted to the stores to get their copies.

Auto repair shop software makes the job of a well trained mechanic much easier, giving diagnostic tips and info, wiring diagrams and pictures of particular components or parts in the vehicle they have looked up. Those are basic skills in some of the older software, as new technology has produced software that can give exact labor estimates and calculate the price of needed OEM parts.

Auto repair shop software is available in its many forms, from simple repair guides to complex programs that help automobile engineers develop new ideas and products. From the cheap software to the pricey big time business programs, repair software can do just about anything you need it to do. I have even run into a few programs that will help the smaller time shop owner get into accounting and bookkeeping in their repair business.

What an amazing thing the world’s best computer programmers could produce. From the brains of the world’s best mechanics and diagram artists, this repair software has helped develop the mechanics way of life. Making well needed information easy to find and no more pages to flip through. No more old receipts with faded illegible writing. No more countless lost files or paper work. Everything can be transferred into electronic data and controlled through many of the different types of auto repair shop software.

Any shop that has not moved into the swing of the computer motion will be left in the dust. There’s no money to be made in old time auto shops that do not have the equipment or software it needs to properly handle the large amounts of customer and vehicle data that come in. This productive software makes it to easy for almost any shop to thrive and earn revenue in the busy world. Which is why you see so many little lube shops popping up everywhere. The chains thrive on software that can basically tell the auto tech how to do their job. Even many of the educational programs for working on automobiles are focused around a set of repair programs that are common in most shops.

This is also the reason you don’t see as many old time mechanic shops around either. They once relied on referrals and small towns to maintain a steady flow of business. Now those small shops have faded away as the neighborhoods grew larger, because they could not accommodate to the larger number of customers and cars that needed service. With just books and paper, even the most talented mechanic had troubles keeping up. On top of that, technology in vehicles is constantly evolving, and there is no way that a mechanic who has been working in the field for 20 years will know everything about the latest model of car.

Repair software makes getting the information you need a breeze, and help organize the mess of clients and their vehicles. It was developed for exactly that purpose, and it is understandable that almost every shop in the world is looking into purchasing or upgrading their software.
