Auto Repair Manuals
Written by admin on May 01, 2010 in Automotive
If you are an amateur auto mechanic who loves to dig in the car engines until the wee hours while most people are under their blankets, entails the spirit of the “do-it-yourself” -doer and are not afraid to get grease on your hands or if you are in an emergency situation, a very handy resource is the availability of the right auto repair manuals.
There are two types of car repair manuals:
Online downloadable manualsPrinted manuals
Online Manuals
The best thing about online manuals are that whatever manual you’ll need for whichever car brand, it is only a few mouse clicks away; you can load it down from the internet in no time.
If the time is a significant factor for you, for instance if you are in a situation that requiers repair information immeadeatlY and your knowledge about the specific problem is limited, the fastest and cheapest solution is to go online to find high quility vehicle repair manuals.
Some of these manuals include not only repair information, but also updated technical service information and some of them even include aproximate business hours. This is valuable info if you decide to take your car to a mechanic: You’ll know in advance how much you could expect to pay for the repair. Most of these websites charge a minor fee for their service, but compared to what you’ll get back, it is worth it.
Good vehichle repair manual sites also features updated diagnostic and maintenance information. Their manuals are Original Service Manuals Written by the manufacturers and contains the original workshop repair descriptions. Therefore many professional auto technicians are using quality downloadable manuals. .
Good manuals contain thousands of pages of diagrams and all the necessary detailed information for the specific vehicle and car part repair.
Printed manuals
I have chosen to make a breif review of three of the best printed motorcar fixing manuals available on the market today. If you chose these instead of the online alternative, expect some time for shipping and handling.
Bentley
the target is the experienced mechanic, and is considered by many experts as the hands-down best reference. probably the most detailed car repair book available Unfortunately, Bentley focuses on European models mostly, not US models.
Factory
The target for these service manuals are factory certified mechanics, and unfortunately not amateurs may require access to special tools only available to authorized mechanics.
Chilton
Simple step-by-step procedures, easy-to-follow standard format their targeted audience is the average, general backyard mechanic focusing on maintenance and basic repairs containing lots of sequential photographs and graphics to simplify maintenance and thus make the job easy and fun. new cars are treated with thorough attention. Older cars however, get lumped together and the instructions for these are a little more generalized.

Avoiding Expensive Car Repairs
Written by admin on April 29, 2010 in Automotive
Most car owners dread taking their vehicles to the auto repair shop. Many people have gone to auto mechanic shops and ended up paying a lot of money for a vehicle repair that they initially thought would be relatively inexpensive. While a few repairs are going to cost a large chunk of money regardless of the precautions that you take, there are a few things that a car owner can do to avoid being overcharged for the average car repair.
When a trip to the car repair shop becomes unavoidable, it is important that all car owners research local repair shops. Try to choose an auto repair shop that a friend or acquaintance has previously had a positive experience with. In some situations auto mechanics will give referred customers a discount. In many cases word of mouth referrals are one of the best ways to save money on repairs. Friends, coworkers, and family members will give a more honest and accurate overview of the service and prices. If you’re on your own this time around, feel free to stop by a repair shop and having something generic done, like an oil change. Pay attention to their treatment of you as a customer as well as the quality of the work that they perform on your vehicle. If you feel like they’ve done a good job, then you might feel more comfortable bringing your vehicle back in the future.
Most importantly, before taking your car to a repair shop, try to find out the general problem and the average costs of labor and parts in your area. The Internet will often provide you with an accurate idea of prices for new and used parts. Also, find out what is the average cost of a part made by the manufacture versus other, generic, parts. When your vehicle is being worked on, stay with your car as much as possible and be aware of what parts are being used on your vehicle. Many unscrupulous auto mechanics will attempt to use cheap parts and then charge the car owner for the price of a more expensive, manufacture vehicle.

BMW Car Parts – Avoiding Costly Repairs
Written by admin on April 27, 2010 in Automotive
Drivers of both old and new BMWs need car parts if they are to avoid costly garage repairs. The technology involved in the design and manufacture of newer BMWs means that there may be less that the owner-maintainer can do; however, you could still save money in key areas. Drivers of older models may be able to repair and service their cars without ever taking them to a garage if they know where to get the best BMW parts.
Seeking out BMW parts
Whether you’re an owner of a new BMW looking for alloy wheels or body parts, or the driver of an older style BMW looking for an engine or gearbox, you need to find dealers who can supply the parts you need. New BMW parts can be expensive, so a great place to go is a breaker or dismantler who has good quality pre-owned car parts for sale at a more reasonable price. This is especially true for older BMW models, where parts are likely to be out of production. The recent scrappage scheme in the UK has added a surge of quality pre-owned parts. Where once your weekend would be spent travelling to specialist yards or particular dealers in order to hunt down a specific BMW car part, today’s owners can sit in their homes and search online: Cheaper, faster, and helping to recycle.
BMWs that are driven by corporate personnel are unlikely to be serviced by their drivers. They will be lease or contract hire vehicles, with a service agreement that ensures that every BMW car part is sourced new and fitted by a professional. Many BMWs, however, are bought and driven by individuals who love the style, build quality and performance of these cars – and these are often the drivers who save money by maintaining the car themselves. By having access to car dismantlers across the country, these owners can get hold of the BMW car parts they are looking for and have them delivered to the door – often saving time and money. Parts sourced this way can be good quality, reliable parts and carry a guarantee, so that you can be certain you’re making the right choice.
Search for BMW parts today
Getting a search done at up to 250 breakers and scrap yards at one go could greatly improve your chances of sourcing the quality used BMW car parts or spares you need. It will probably save you a great deal of time and money. Let us help your search for cheap car spares.
Cheap scrap car parts could help your BMW stay on the road at a reasonable price. Click on the accompanying links to start your search.

Ask A Mechanic – Wading Through the Mess of Car Repair Prices and Auto Repair Estimates
Written by admin on April 25, 2010 in Automotive
If you were handed an estimate to replace a water pump on your car, would you know if the price was fair? Could you trust the price? How about for a tie rod end, mass air flow sensor, or an evaporative emissions sensor?
Most of us don’t know what these are, never mind the price. Yet it is components such as these that are commonly used to over charge you, the car repair customer.
We no longer live in an age of trust, so how do we ensure that our auto repair costs are legitimate.
How many times have you suspected that you paid too much, but couldn’t prove it? How many times did the price seem exorbitant for even simple repairs?
To illustrate just how “At Risk” the everyday auto repair customer is to excessive car repair prices, here’s a recent real life example from a “reputable…?” dealer.
A client brought her Audi to an authorized Audi dealership for a standard timing belt maintenance service.
The price for this service averages $1575 at the dealership level, (including pulleys, water pump…etc) and about $1275 at the independent repair shop level.
Yet the woman left the dealer with a bill for $2025.68.
What happened?
According to the repair order, there were no abnormal circumstances, no problems noted by the technician such as rust or any other extenuating circumstances that would have perhaps increased the labor, or added additional parts.
In short, it was a straight forward service, but the bill was $450.68 higher than it should have been. There is simply no legitimate reason to have “that much” discrepancy.
How’d they get away with it?
The answer is very simple, and it’s a point that I don’t want anyone to miss:
They get away with it because they can!
Think about it. The average person doesn’t know how much auto parts cost. And who knows how much labor time a repair should take? To what sources does one turn to find out this information? Who even has the time to investigate!
Upon examination of this woman’s repair order, it was found that she was charged a full 4 hours “more” than the standard labor time. At $100 per hour, this added an additional $400. The remaining $50.68 came from the parts, which were billed higher than MSRP.
She was quoted $2,025 for a repair that tops out at $1575. The woman didn’t know. She just paid the bill and left.
How many times do folks just pay the bill and leave? Pretty much that’s all one can do given that there is no accessible information for the car repair customer to adequately question a repair bill. Furthermore, very few even know what questions to ask!
The auto repair industry has been over-charging for decades–sometimes subtly, sometimes boldly, definitely frequently. The evidence for this is overwhelming; yet, there are no easy solutions available for the car repair customer.
Government agencies can’t help. The Better Business Bureau can’t do anything. Even supposed “car repair experts or advocates” lack the understanding of the breadth and insidiousness of the car repair business at all its levels.
A dealership operates differently than an independent repair shop, and a franchise, like Midas, is totally unique. Who really knows what goes on in the underground of such a diverse and complex industry?
The Solution?
First and foremost, car repair customers need access to information on car repair prices. Without this, they’ve got nothing tangible in which to determine fair charges. They also need to be able to navigate the maze of parts and labor charges for car repairs and maintenance.
Like everything else, information is the key to ensure fair treatment. Without it, the car repair customer will continue to “swim with the sharks” without any protection.

Car Repair Scams: Why Traditional Scam Prevention Tips Will Cost You A Fortune
Written by admin on April 23, 2010 in Automotive
The advice is all the same for auto repair scam prevention. You’ll be told to find an ASE certified shop. Ask around. Check out several different repair facilities first. Are they clean and neat? Do they provide written estimates? Check with the BBB. Is it AAA certified? Some will even advise to “ask for the parts back.”
Traditional tips and suggestions merely put a band-aid over an infected, gaping sore. Strong antibiotics are required to address the root source of the problems in the repair industry. To provide repair customers with the above advice is like sending a soldier into combat dressed in a pink tutu. We have to stop scratching at the surface.
There has not been any “new” advice in decades. More importantly, no one has answered why car repair scams have reached an estimated 40 billion dollars per year. Moreover, why is there still no solution to stop car repair scams?
The first hurdle to conquer is the perception of the frequency of auto repair scams. Many folks just don’t believe that car repair fraud is all that bad. Some even argue that the vast majority of repair shops do an honest day’s work, and that a few bad apples are making the rest look like crooks.
This is an interesting argument, and raises a number of questions.
If it is only a few “bad apples,” where are they hiding the 40 billion? If most repair shops are honest, why does every state warn against car repair scams? Why are auto repair shops at the top of consumer complaint lists every single year, in every state? Why are repair scams spreading across the continents? For example, just last week Australia listed car repair scams at number 4 on their top 10 consumer complaint list.
The perception of frequency gets distorted because there are a number of levels to repair scams. There are the blatant rip-offs covered in the news. Then there are the common scams such as exorbitant prices and estimates, and aggressive scare tactics to get service customers to perform services. These occur every day.
The repair scams uncovered by RepairTrust not only found the tactics listed above and more, but a powerful undercurrent of scamming at the foundation of the automotive service industry. In reality, most car repair scams go unnoticed by the service consumer. Service customers just have no idea that they were ripped-off. This under-the-radar scamming occurs in dealerships, local shops, and franchises. Affiliation with ASE, AAA, BBB, NADA makes no difference.
An ASE patch on a technician’s arm, or an AAA or BBB sticker on the door of a service center means absolutely nothing in terms of a scam-free facility. Word of mouth recommendations can be just as devastating, as even shops that “seem” honest aren’t. Check out Car Repair Prices: There Are No Honest Mechanics @ EzineArticles or RepairTrust for further discussion on this. Also, for NEW and FREE scam prevention tips visit the Car Repair Scam Articles @ RepairTrust.
Traditional tips are ineffective in today’s service industry. Service facilities have found new and ingenious ways of ripping people off. In truth, many of the old tips and suggestions have actually become weapons allowing service centers to indulge in car repair scams more than ever.
The car repair playing field must be leveled. Service customers need solid answers, and they need to be equipped with information, understanding, tools, and an insider’s view of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of price-gouging. Navigating the dim underworld of today’s service centers with outdated information will cost a fortune.

Car Repair Prices: Five Money-Saving Tips You Must Know Before Having Your Vehicle Serviced Anywhere
Written by admin on April 23, 2010 in Automotive
Never accept Ball Park Estimates. Be on alert when you’re told: “About $800 and your car will be perfect.” Or, “It should run around $200 bucks.” If you went to a hotel and asked how much a room was for the night and the clerk said “Oh…I’d say around $200 bucks.” Would you accept that? Of course not! When service centers suggest additional work, ask them to prioritize the suggestions in terms of immediacy and safety. Have them fax or e-mail an itemized estimate for your review. When in doubt–WAIT! If you are feeling pressured by a service representative to authorize work or charges of which you are unsure, wait until you have all the information you need. Get a second opinion if necessary. Service representatives are great at phrasing automotive concerns in a very ominous light. Get all estimates in writing, and itemized. This will allow you to scrutinize the charges. It will also let your service representative know that you mean business–fair business. Just asking for the break down will cause service representatives to think twice about price-gouging you. If a service center can’t provide a complete and professional estimate quickly, go somewhere else. Be nice, sincere, and shrewd. Seriously, service representatives will go to bat for you if you treat them with courtesy and respect…
Here’s an example:
When I was a flat rate technician, I found a “note to the technician” in the client’s car I was servicing. It stated (paraphrased):
“Dear Technician, you folks have always done an incredible job on all my cars. I am sorry to be so picky, but my car is brand new and it has an irritating rattle at 65mph from inside the dash.”
Dash rattles on new cars are every technician’s nightmare. They’re time consuming, and they don’t pay. These types of concerns frequently get written off as “No Problem Found,” or “Could not Duplicate.” However, in this case, I spent 2 hours diagnosing and repairing this client’s rattle. I was only paid .3 hours for the repair, which amounted to $4.33 in my paycheck, but I didn’t mind.
The point is: when you treat your service representatives with respect, you’re less likely to get price-gouged, and more likely to get your car fixed correctly the first time.
IMPORTANT: Having said this, being nice does not mean agreeing with everything your representative tells you. If you’re always agreeing to your service representative’s recommendations, he’ll keep making them–that’s how he’s paid.
Even if he seems like a friend, it saves to be shrewd and to ask questions. In terms of being nice, though–everybody likes to help the nice guy whenever possible.

Car Repair Coupons – 4 Types of Repairs to Save On
Written by admin on April 21, 2010 in Automotive
Car repair coupons are essentially like free money. Every car needs a certain amount of regular maintenance and repairs: oil changes and tune ups to keep it running its best, and replacement parts such as tires, brakes, batteries, and alternators as the old parts wear out. Since you already have to pay for these repairs anyway, these should be used to knock the cost of regular maintenance down a little.
Car repair coupons can be found in a lot of different places. Local auto repair shops often place advertisements and coupons in local newspapers, magazines, and other publications. Online coupon sites, such as Valpak are also a great resource for coupon clippers. Finally, many shops send out their own mailings or post their current specials right on their website. Here are the four types you are most likely to find.
1: Oil changes are the most frequent type of maintenance cars need. By about three thousand miles, the oil and oil filter in your engine start to wear out. Replacing the oil and filter regularly keeps your engine running smoothly, prevents harmful buildup inside your engine, and even helps to maintain optimal gas mileage. Dirty oil, on the other hand, creates buildup that can damage the engine, leads to dried-out and leaky seals and gaskets, and creates more resistance on the engine as it thickens — causing your fuel bill to increase too.
Since oil changes are needed so frequently, there are tons of auto repair shops and quick lube places ready to compete for your business. Because of this, shops almost always include a coupon for a discounted oil change.
2: Tune Ups. After oil changes, tune ups are the next most common repair that car owners have to do: Tune ups typically should be done once a year, or every twenty or thirty thousand miles, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. A tune up typically includes replacing the air filter, the spark plugs, PCV valve, and the distributor cap and rotor; some parts only need to be replaced every two or three years, such as the oxygen sensor and the spark plug wires. The mechanic will also visually inspect the car’s various systems to make sure everything is functioning correctly.
All of the potential replacements can make tune ups very expensive, particularly if the mechanic finds something wrong. Auto shops will give you a discount on at least the basic tune up, so that if something else turns out to be wrong, at least the bill won’t hit you quite as hard.
3: Wheel alignment is another one of those things that you should have checked regularly. Most auto repair shops offer an inexpensive wheel alignment check that will tell you if you need your wheel alignment done. Proper wheel alignment produces the least amount of rolling resistance on your car, ensuring that you get the optimum gas mileage; it also causes the entire tread of the tires to make contact with the road as you drive, which spreads the wear out along the entire tread and helps your tires to last longer.
With the expensive but very precise equipment most repair shops use these days, wheel alignments can be pretty expensive. To compete with one another for your business, many repair shops will issue alignment coupons periodically, often offering a significant discount off the normal price.
4: New Tires. With the length of the average commute these days, most people end up needing to buy new tires every couple of years. Since tires can be pretty expensive, many tire shops and service centers send out mailings and print them in local papers. If you know you will need tires soon, be on the lookout for these coupons.
There are many other types of car repair coupons than the four listed above. These are just the most common. You’ll notice as you hunt for coupons that you also find some for replacement windshields, bodywork, and even general repairs. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find a coupon from an auto repair shop that simply states dollars off for any repair work made over a certain amount spent. You’ll find that looking for discounts is like an Easter egg hunt. The coupons are all right there under your nose; you just have to look for them.

Auto Body Repairs That Will Save You Money
Written by admin on April 21, 2010 in Automotive
Your vehicle can last you a long time if you take care of it. In our changing economy right now, you will want to make your current vehicle last a long time. That means you should care for it, keep up with routine maintenance, and take care of any repairs that arise. You may think that only engine or mechanic repairs must be taken care. However, it is important that you take care of auto body repairs as well. There are many auto body repairs that will really save you money down the road!
So many people underestimate the importance of getting paint touch up for their vehicles. Our vehicles paint usually gets small chips or cracks from road debris and other small things that may hit it. Paint touch up will cover those chips and cracks. It is best to take your vehicle to an auto reconditioning shop to get paint touch up since they have the technology to match your vehicles paint for the new paint. Usually it does not make the vehicle look totally better but there is a bigger reason why you get paint touch up. Your vehicles paint is a sealant for the auto body’s metal frame. It keeps it from contacting water and other harmful elements which cause rust. You really don’t want any rust to form on your vehicle, that will cost you more money and more time versus simply getting paint touch up with is quick and affordable.
Bumper repair is another repair that is often overlooked. It is important that your bumper be in the best shape possible, not all for looks, but because your bumper is what protects your vehicle from further damage and your passengers. So, if your bumper is currently damaged you run the risk of incurring more damage if involved in any form of accident which will cost you much more than bumper repair. Bumper repair is another repair that is quick and affordable.
One more repair that can set you behind financially if you don’t get done right away is windshield repair. A lot of times our windshields get cracks or chips from road debris that kicks up on the road. If the damaged windshield is taken in for repair promptly, it can be repaired. However if you wait too long you will have to end up buying and replacement windshield and paying to have it installed which is much more costly than a simply repair. Also some shops will offer a mobile service where they will come to you to repair your windshield.
All of these repairs can be completed at most auto reconditioning shops. They are all affordable and can be completed quickly! But if you don’t take care of these repairs quickly you will face the chances of paying much more later and being without your vehicle longer. So, save yourself money and get auto body repairs! Find an auto reconditioning shop near you who can help keep more money in your wallet and get your vehicles looking great!

How To Spot Auto Repair Fraud
Written by admin on April 19, 2010 in Automotive
Have you ever seen a person get suckered into paying more than they should have for an imaginary auto repair? Well, it happened to me. I won’t use the name of the place here. All I’m going to say is that I was taking my vehicle in for a standard oil change and left this particular place about $1,000 later. I had been led to believe that there was more wrong with my car than there really was. Truth be told, my car was brand new and there was nothing wrong with it. Shame on me, I guess- but shame on those people for trying (and successfully) fooling another customer.
It is not unusual for car owners to end up paying a lot of money to have repairs made on their vehicles. Cars require a lot of maintenance and if this maintenance is overlooked the resulting repairs can be an extreme drain on finances. While many expensive car charges are perfectly legitimate and expected there are a few auto mechanics that will attempt to take advantage of the fact that many consumers expect to spend a lot of money on car repairs. Each year car owners are over charged thousands of dollars for vehicle repairs. In order to avoid being taken advantage of there are a few tricks that consumers must be aware of.
Be wary of “specials” on oil changes, tune-ups, and other regular maintenance services. Many unscrupulous auto repair shops will use these advertised prices to attract new customers looking for a deal. Once the customer shows up to the shop the mechanic will try to separate the car owner from their vehicle and then later tell the car owner that there are many things wrong with the vehicle in order to charge more for repairs. Usually, when a scam is under way the auto repair shop will attempt to frighten the car owner into having the repairs done immediately by claiming that they will face dire consequences if they attempt to leave before having the repairs made. Don’t fall for this trap, however. If you are inexperienced when it comes to your knowledge of vehicles, don’t allow someone else to take advantage. Bring someone with you who knows a thing or two about cars, this way they catch the employee in a lie and/or give you advice. If you can’t bring someone, have your phone handy and simply tell the employee that you don’t feel comfortable with making a decision until you speak to someone more knowledgeable about car repairs.
Another way to spot repair fraud in the making is auto repair shops being unwilling to put estimates in writing. Most legitimate auto mechanics have no problem with providing written estimates prior to beginning the work. On the other hand, repair shops that are hoping to use fraud to get more money out of customer than necessary will only provide a verbal quote. This will allow the auto mechanic to complete any work they wish (or charge for parts and work not completed) without the customers consent. When this happens most customers have no choice but to pay for the repairs they did not want.

Auto Body Repairs Work For Budgets
Written by admin on April 17, 2010 in Automotive
Many, if not most of us are on a budget today. We are watching where we spend each and every dollar. We are also making sure that we get the best deal for the money that we do spend. There is nothing wrong with that. However, sometimes things come up that we do not always plan for and we need to spend some money that we really weren’t planning to. One such thing is when our vehicle needs repair. If your vehicle has auto body damage you should find out about auto body repairs. This is something that can be done, even on a budget.
Many people put off getting their vehicle repaired because they think it will cost too much money. Sometimes the repairs can be costly. But that really depends on a few things. For example, what needs to be repaired, where will you take your vehicle for repair and will you get the existing materials repaired or will you have them replaced? All of these things will have an effect on your bill total.
The first thing you need to remember is to choose auto body repair! If you choose auto body replacement you will be paying a lot more money. It cost money to order the replacement part. You will not only get charged for the part but have to pay more since it will usually take longer than repairs. You may also have to get a rental car while you are waiting for the repair to be completed. That will cost you more money.
With auto body repairs, the auto reconditioning specialist will repair what materials are still on the vehicle. They have many advanced methods to repairing vehicles in a way that you can hardly tell that there was damage to begin with. Most repairs can be completed quickly in a few hours. Also you will not have to wait for any parts to come in so you will not have to rent a vehicle. Also to add to that many auto body shops offer a mobile service for some services they offer. So, they will come to you whether it be work, home or wherever and repair your vehicle for you. Since repairs can be completed quicker and there are no replacement parts you will not have to pay as much. So, if you are on a budget auto body repair is clearly the choice for you.
You may not think you need auto body repair, but it is best to get it done. You will prevent your vehicle from further damage, keep yourself and passengers safe, keep your vehicle looking nice, and maintain its resale value.
You just need to find an auto body shop that will complete the repairs for quickly. Also don’t forget as much as you will want a qualified auto body specialist to work on your car, you want and need a good price. So, look around before choosing and find a shop that you feel comfortable with and that fits into your budget!
